What is dental implant treatment? Process, assessment and care

Learn about the planning, surgical and care stages of implant treatment, the alternatives and factors considered during assessment.

How is a dental implant used?

A dental implant is a component, usually made of titanium, placed in the jawbone to support a prosthesis planned to replace missing teeth. It may support a single crown, a bridge or certain removable dentures. The appropriate option depends on factors such as the number of missing teeth and the structure of the mouth. Not every missing tooth needs to be replaced using the same method.

What is assessed at the first examination?

The dentist assesses oral and gum health, the remaining teeth, the bite and the jawbone, and requests imaging when needed. General health, medications, smoking and previous treatments should be discussed. Gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes or certain medications may affect planning. This information enables a discussion of the method to be used and potential risks.

Treatment and healing stages

After the implant is placed, time is needed for healing and integration with the bone. The prosthesis is then prepared using impressions or a scan, depending on the situation. The number of appointments, need for a temporary prosthesis and treatment duration vary from person to person. It is important to follow the dentist’s advice about pain, swelling or bleeding after the procedure and report unexpected symptoms.

How is an implant cared for?

The area around an implant can also be affected by plaque accumulation and gum inflammation. Daily brushing, interdental cleaning recommended by the dentist and regular check-ups are the foundations of care. Smoking, inadequate hygiene and gum disease may increase the risk of problems. If you notice looseness, bleeding or pain, consult your dentist for an assessment.

What can you ask your dentist?

You can ask whether alternatives such as a bridge or removable denture are suitable for you as well as an implant. Ask about any imaging that may be needed, the type of prosthesis and how your existing teeth will be preserved. What you can eat during recovery and when you can return to your normal routine depend on your individual plan. Find out in advance how to contact the clinic if symptoms increase or unexpected symptoms occur after surgery. Once treatment is complete, you can also ask for the recommended check-up interval and a practical demonstration of how to clean around the implant. Products used to clean the prosthesis and any adjustments needed may vary according to the type of restoration; plan the recommendations with your dentist.
