About root canal treatment
Root canal treatment is an option intended to remove infected or damaged tissue inside a tooth and seal the root canals.
When might it be considered?
Deep decay, cracks or trauma can affect the tissue inside a tooth. Pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling may occur; a definitive assessment requires an examination and any necessary imaging.
Treatment stages
Local anaesthesia is used when necessary. The dentist accesses the inside of the tooth, removes affected tissue, shapes the canals and fills them appropriately. Depending on the tooth, treatment may require more than one appointment.
How is the tooth restored afterwards?
The treated tooth may be restored with a filling. Some teeth with extensive tissue loss may need an additional restoration such as a crown. Your dentist will explain the choice based on the tooth's condition.
Recovery and follow-up
Sensitivity may occur in the first few days. If you have a temporary filling or an unfinished restoration, follow your dentist's advice about chewing with that tooth. Report increasing swelling or persistent pain promptly.
Frequently asked questions
Is root canal treatment completed in one visit?
The number of visits depends on the tooth's structure and the state of the infection; an exact duration cannot be given before an examination.
Is a crown always necessary after root canal treatment?
Not for every tooth. The decision depends on the remaining tooth structure and chewing conditions.
Does root canal treatment guarantee that the tooth will be saved?
No. The aim is to preserve the tooth; the outcome depends on its condition, the treatment and subsequent care.
