What is teeth whitening? Suitability and considerations

Read basic information about checks of teeth and gums before whitening, possible sensitivity and restorations.

What is the aim of teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a procedure intended to lighten the colour of natural teeth. The cause of discolouration and the tooth’s existing condition can affect the result. An assessment by a dentist helps determine whether whitening is suitable and what the alternatives are. The same shade cannot be guaranteed for every tooth, nor can a permanent effect be guaranteed.

Why is an examination needed beforehand?

Teeth and gum health should be assessed before the procedure. If decay, gum disease or sensitivity is present, care for these conditions may be needed first. Tell your dentist about pregnancy, breastfeeding and your current health. The dentist explains whether the procedure is suitable and the safer options according to age and health.

Do restorations change colour too?

Whitening is intended to affect the colour of natural teeth; crowns, fillings, veneers or denture materials may not change colour in the same way. If restorations are visible, colour matching should therefore be discussed beforehand. After an oral examination, the dentist can assess possible differences and, if necessary, options for restorations.

What should you consider afterwards?

Temporary tooth sensitivity or gum discomfort may occur after whitening. Contact your dentist if discomfort is severe or persists. Using products purchased online or non-professional procedures without consulting a dentist may harm teeth and gums. Daily oral care and regular check-ups are important for overall oral health.

What can you ask your dentist?

Ask about possible causes of discolouration, treatment options and colour matching with your existing restorations. Find out the duration of care recommended by your dentist and what to do if you experience sensitivity. How long the effect lasts depends on the individual, habits and the method used. If you have pain or another oral health concern, do not treat it solely as a cosmetic issue. A dentist can assess the cause, necessary treatment and whether whitening is suitable. Before the procedure, learn about the recommended whitening method, possible side effects and what to do if sensitivity occurs.
