What is an E-Max crown? Choosing a ceramic restoration

Learn about the assessment and care of lithium disilicate ceramic restorations known as E-Max.

What kind of material does E-Max refer to?

The name E-Max is associated with lithium disilicate glass-ceramic restorations used in dentistry. In suitable cases, this type of ceramic can be used for different restorations such as crowns or veneers. The trade name alone does not indicate which procedure is needed; the material and design are selected according to the condition and location of the tooth and the treatment plan.

How is the material chosen?

The dentist evaluates remaining tooth tissue, bite forces, aesthetic expectations and existing restorations. Lithium disilicate and zirconia-based ceramics have different properties and uses; no single material can be said to be the best option in every situation. How the material is applied and fixed also depends on the type of restoration.

What may happen during treatment?

After examination and planning, the tooth may need preparation, an impression or scan may be taken, and the restoration may be made and checked for fit. The need for a temporary restoration varies by person. Discuss beforehand whether tooth tissue must be removed, the limits of the procedure, alternatives and possible sensitivity with your dentist.

Care and follow-up

The tooth and gums around a ceramic restoration still require regular care. Daily brushing, suitable interdental cleaning and check-ups should not be neglected. Clenching, biting hard objects or trauma can damage a restoration. If you notice loosening, a fracture or pain, contact your dentist rather than trying to fix it yourself.

The difference between a crown and a veneer

A crown generally covers a larger surface of a tooth, while a veneer is mostly applied to its front surface. The suitable restoration depends on the amount of tooth tissue lost and the dentist’s examination. In some cases no restoration may be needed, or a different method may be preferred. Before starting, ask how much the tooth will be prepared and how the restoration should be protected. Digital examples or material names alone do not replace an individual treatment plan. The material considered suitable and the preparation required can vary with personal circumstances even among restorations sold under the same name. Writing down your questions before the appointment may make the discussion easier.
