Teeth Clenching and Grinding Treatments

Tooth clenching and grinding can be associated with sensitivity or discomfort in the teeth and jaw muscles.

A clinical assessment helps identify the cause of symptoms and suitable options for the individual. Contact our clinic about the scope of services.

Understanding teeth clenching and grinding

Teeth clenching or grinding can occur during the day or sleep. Assessment may be helpful because it can be associated with tooth wear and jaw muscle symptoms.

What are the symptoms?

Tooth sensitivity, wear, jaw muscle pain, headaches or grinding during sleep may be noticed. These symptoms can also have other causes.

What is discussed during an examination?

The dentist assesses signs of tooth wear or breakage, pain and jaw movements. Factors such as medications, sleep patterns and stress may be discussed as part of the health history.

Possible approaches

Depending on the person’s circumstances, a protective mouth splint, assessment of habits or support from another healthcare professional may be considered. Not every patient needs a splint or procedure.

Follow-up and care

Use and clean any recommended device as directed by your clinician. Request reassessment for increased pain, a broken device or persistent symptoms. Contact the clinic for its scope of services.

Frequently asked questions

Does clenching only happen during sleep?

No. Clenching without being aware of it can also occur during the day.

Does a night guard completely stop clenching?

A splint may help protect the teeth from damage in appropriate patients; it cannot be said to eliminate the cause of clenching in every case.

Is all tooth wear caused by clenching?

No. Wear can have other causes; a clinician’s assessment is needed.
