How should crowns and dentures be cared for?

Basic care information for cleaning and checking fixed restorations and removable dentures.

Why is regular care of restorations important?

Using a crown, bridge or removable denture does not eliminate the need for oral cleaning. The gums, natural teeth and area around the restoration require regular monitoring. Because the type and design of the prosthesis affect cleaning methods, it is useful to decide with your dentist which tools to use.

Fixed crowns and bridges

Plaque can accumulate at the edges of crowns and restorations, so regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth are important. Special floss or an interdental brush may be recommended under bridges or between neighbouring teeth. Your dentist or oral health professional can demonstrate the appropriate technique.

Cleaning removable dentures

Ask your dentist for cleaning and overnight-wear advice appropriate to your denture. Take care not to drop and damage it. Unsuitable cleaners or very hot water may damage some materials. Do not try to modify or repair the denture yourself.

What situations need a check-up?

See a dentist if you notice loosening or fracture of a restoration or denture, pain, sore spots or changes in chewing. Gum bleeding or persistent bad breath should also be assessed. At check-ups, the fit of the restoration, surrounding gums and health of other teeth may be reviewed together.

What can be expected long term?

Over time restorations may need maintenance, repair or replacement. Their lifespan varies with material, bite, oral care and individual circumstances. Regular check-ups and daily cleaning suited to you help identify problems early; a specific lifespan cannot be guaranteed.

Discussing clenching and care

Night-time clenching can affect the forces on restorations and natural teeth. Tell your dentist if you notice clenching or grinding, have pain in your jaw muscles or experience morning headaches. The dentist can assess symptoms and the bite and make individual recommendations. At your check-up, also ask which brush or floss is appropriate for cleaning the restoration.

Treatment and follow-up decisions are considered with your dentist in light of individual findings; general information does not replace an examination.
