What are All on Four and All on Six? Implant-supported prostheses

Learn about implant-supported prosthetic options for complete tooth loss, assessment, care and questions to ask.

What do All on Four and All on Six mean?

These names refer to approaches in which four or six implants are planned to support a complete dental arch in one jaw. A fixed prosthesis may be designed on the implants. The number of implants and type of prosthesis are chosen individually; a specific number in the name does not mean the same plan is suitable for everyone.

Who may be assessed for these options?

Options may be considered for people with complete tooth loss or those who need comprehensive planning because of the condition of their remaining teeth. The dentist assesses bone volume, gum health, bite, general health and medications. Radiological imaging is performed if needed. Removable dentures and other implant-supported options can also be discussed during the assessment.

How do planning and treatment proceed?

The consultation covers expectations, the type of prosthesis, the possibility of a temporary prosthesis, care and follow-up. Surgery and subsequent healing are planned according to individual needs. When a temporary or final prosthesis can be fitted depends on the clinical situation; it cannot be said that treatment will be completed on the same day or according to the same timetable for every patient.

Why is long-term care important?

Food and plaque can accumulate around an implant-supported prosthesis. Ask your dentist which areas need cleaning and which brushes or interdental tools are suitable. Regular check-ups help assess the fit of the prosthesis and the tissues around the implants. If you notice bleeding, tenderness or movement of the prosthesis, contact your clinic without delay.

Preparing for the consultation

Share information about your existing removable denture, medications and previous dental treatments. Ask whether you can remove the planned prosthesis yourself, how to reach the areas that need cleaning and whether a temporary prosthesis may be used. If surgery is recommended, ask for an explanation of expected healing, possible complications and alternative methods. The ability to attend regular check-ups and maintain daily oral care are important considerations when assessing the plan. Treatment duration and the number of implants cannot be confirmed before imaging and the clinical examination are complete. You can also ask your dentist about daily care of the prosthesis, the materials to use and which areas will be examined at regular check-ups.
