How should you care for your mouth after an implant?

Learn what to consider during early and long-term care after implant treatment.

Why is your dentist’s advice important in the first days?

Care instructions after implant surgery can vary with the extent of surgery and a person’s health. Your dentist’s written and verbal instructions take precedence over general advice. Do not hesitate to ask before or after the procedure about medication, food, cleaning or follow-up appointments.

Cleaning in the early period

Follow your dentist’s instructions about when and how to clean the treated area. In some cases, you may be advised not to brush the area directly for a time or to use a particular cleaning method. It is important not to neglect cleaning the rest of the mouth. Use mouthwash or another product only as your dentist recommends.

Eating and daily life

Your dentist may recommend soft foods initially or avoiding pressure on the treated area. Until numbness wears off, take care with hot food and drinks and avoid accidental biting. Discuss smoking and other personal risks with your dentist, as these can affect healing.

Long-term implant care

After healing, the gums and prosthesis around the implant require regular cleaning. Your dentist can demonstrate the use of a brush, floss or interdental brush suited to the prosthesis design. Brushing twice daily and regular professional check-ups help monitor both natural teeth and the area around the implant.

Which symptoms should be reported?

Contact the team treating you if swelling increases, unexpected bleeding or persistent pain occurs, or you feel movement in the implant or prosthesis. Seek emergency medical care for urgent symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swallowing. Keeping check-up appointments provides an opportunity to assess problems.

What can be discussed at a follow-up appointment?

It is useful to learn when the first check-up will be, how stitches will be monitored if present and when to begin cleaning the prosthesis. The tools used may change when a permanent prosthesis is fitted, so ask again about the new cleaning steps. During regular follow-up, the gums around the implant, prosthesis connections and the person’s cleaning habits are assessed. Your treatment team determines the most suitable plan for your circumstances.
