Oral care while wearing braces

Basic information about cleaning teeth, brackets and spaces between teeth during orthodontic treatment.

Why is cleaning important during orthodontic treatment?

Food debris and plaque can collect around fixed wires and brackets. Decay and gum problems can develop in areas that are not cleaned adequately. Alongside orthodontic appointments, maintaining general dental check-ups is important for monitoring teeth and gums.

How should brushing be planned?

Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste is the basic step. Gently clean the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of the teeth as well as above and below the brackets and along the gumline. Your orthodontist can show you a suitable frequency and technique, including cleaning after meals, according to your appliance.

Between teeth and around the appliance

Dental floss or a suitably sized interdental brush may help clean areas a regular toothbrush struggles to reach. Ask your dentist how to use them without forcing the wire or gums. Follow cleaning and storage instructions for removable aligners and retainers; do not use methods such as hot water without advice.

Food and broken parts

Hard, sticky or very crunchy foods may damage some fixed appliances. Frequent sugary food and drinks can also increase the risk of decay. If a bracket comes loose, a wire pokes or an appliance breaks, contact your orthodontist rather than trying to fix it yourself.

Why continue check-ups?

The orthodontist monitors treatment progress and the appliance, while the dentist assesses your general oral health. Report marked redness, swelling or pain in the gums. The length of time a recommended retainer should be worn after treatment is also determined by the individual plan.

Does the retention period also require care?

A retainer may be used after active orthodontic treatment to maintain tooth position. Fixed and removable appliances may require different cleaning. Follow your orthodontist’s instructions on when to wear the appliance, how to clean it and what to do if it is damaged. The duration is not the same for everyone, and follow-ups continue according to the dentist’s plan.

Treatment and follow-up decisions are considered with your dentist in light of individual findings; general information does not replace an examination.
