What is assessed before smile design?

How are oral health, expectations and treatment options assessed during a smile design consultation?

What does smile design involve?

Smile design considers a person’s expectations about their smile alongside an assessment of the teeth, gums and facial structure. It does not mean a single standard procedure. Health and preferences matter in planning; the same treatment or visual result may not be suitable for everyone.

Oral health is assessed first

The dentist may examine decay, gum health, existing fillings and the bite. If an active oral health problem is present, addressing it before cosmetic options may be recommended. Tooth function and the ability to clean teeth are as important as appearance. Required checks and imaging depend on the individual’s circumstances.

How are expectations discussed?

The person can describe what they would like to change about the colour, shape or alignment of their teeth or their smile. The dentist explains the relationship between the current situation and expectations, and the options. Photographs, impressions or digital images can support planning; they do not guarantee that a proposed result will occur exactly as shown.

Options vary by individual

Different options such as orthodontics, whitening or restorative procedures may be considered. Some people may not need any procedure. Discuss the possible benefits, limits, effects on natural tooth tissue and care needs of each option with your dentist. Treatment is chosen after a detailed examination and a shared decision.

What questions can be asked?

It may be useful to ask why a procedure is recommended, whether there are alternatives and how tooth tissue needs to be prepared. Learning the number of appointments and the care needed afterwards also helps planning. Instead of aiming to reproduce another person’s smile exactly, the individual’s own facial and oral features are considered.

What is the role of digital images?

Photographs and digital planning tools may be used to discuss expectations between the dentist and the individual. Such work is a communication and assessment aid; actual tooth, gum and bite conditions need to be examined clinically. Preview images do not make a definite promise about treatment results. The clinical suitability of changes discussed on the image is assessed separately.

This content is for general information; diagnosis and treatment options depend on an individual examination.
