When is a dental filling needed?

Basic information about dental fillings, materials used and care after a filling.

What is a dental filling?

A filling repairs tooth tissue lost to decay or another cause using a suitable material. Its aim is to help restore the tooth’s shape and function. Whether a filling will be sufficient is determined after assessing the size and location of the loss and the overall condition of the tooth.

Does all sensitivity require a filling?

Sensitivity to cold or sweet foods may be associated with different problems on the tooth surface. A hole in a tooth, food getting trapped or a fracture should also be assessed. These symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis; the dentist investigates the cause with an examination and imaging when considered necessary.

How is filling material chosen?

Tooth-coloured materials such as composite and different types of filling are available. The choice considers the location of the filling, chewing forces, remaining tooth tissue and the person’s oral health. Other types of restoration may also be considered for some large areas of tissue loss. It is useful to discuss the limits and care requirements of each material with your dentist.

The procedure and afterwards

After examination, the area is numbed if needed; damaged tissue is removed and the chosen material placed. The bite is checked. Sensitivity may be felt for a while afterwards. Consult your dentist if the filling feels high when biting, pain increases or symptoms persist.

What matters in caring for a filling?

A filled tooth can still be affected by decay and gum disease. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, interdental cleaning and check-ups recommended by your dentist are important. Reducing frequent sugar consumption can contribute to oral health. A filling’s lifespan varies with individual habits and circumstances.

Is pain after a filling always normal?

Symptoms after a procedure can vary with the person and the treatment performed. Eating before numbness wears off can cause the cheek or tongue to be bitten without noticing. If the filled tooth clearly contacts first when you bite, or pain increases, tell your dentist rather than waiting for it to pass. The filling and tooth can be checked again in an examination.

Treatment and follow-up decisions are considered with your dentist in light of individual findings; general information does not replace an examination.
