What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Learn when bleeding, swelling and other gum symptoms should be assessed by a dentist.

How can gum disease be noticed?

Redness, swelling or bleeding during brushing and flossing may occur in the gums. Bad breath or a bad taste may also be present. Because these symptoms can have different causes, it is important to seek a dental assessment rather than diagnosing yourself from internet information alone.

Why do gum problems develop?

Bacterial plaque that accumulates on tooth surfaces can irritate the gums if not removed regularly. Factors such as oral care habits and smoking affect oral health. Individual health conditions are also part of the assessment. Risks and treatment needs are not the same for everyone.

How does a dentist assess the condition?

The examination may look at the appearance of the gums, bleeding and tissues around the teeth; measurements or imaging may be performed if needed. Based on the findings, the dentist explains whether deposits need cleaning, oral care needs adjustment or more advanced treatment is needed. Not ignoring early signs is important for appropriate assessment.

What can be done in daily care?

Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth every day with an appropriate tool help control plaque. You can ask your dentist to demonstrate correct use of floss or an interdental brush. If bleeding continues, its cause should be assessed rather than stopping brushing.

When should you seek help more promptly?

Contact a dentist without delay if gums are very painful or noticeably swollen, teeth are loose, or a persistent sore or lump is noticed in the mouth. Emergency medical care is needed for urgent signs such as rapidly increasing facial swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Does bleeding always mean serious disease?

A single symptom is not enough to show the type or severity of a condition. Bleeding can be associated with different situations, from irritation during brushing to other gum problems. Rather than diagnosing yourself, tell your dentist how long it has continued and whether you have other symptoms. Dental assessment determines suitable care and, if needed, a treatment plan.

Treatment and follow-up decisions are considered with your dentist in light of individual findings; general information does not replace an examination.
